C. William Anderson
C. William Anderson is a lover of travel adventure and history who has lived and worked in Botswana, Egypt, Libya and the Middle East. He currently publishes a blog, Living Among Nature Daringly, at his personal homepage.
Living Among Nature Daringly - People Breaking Free - Life in Montana, Wyoming & the Dakotas - the Empty Quarter
CW's route to finding a home to match his ideals for living among nature took a long, meandering and often daring route through Asia, Africa and the Americas, north, south and central. His wanderlust came honestly. Three of his grandparents were immigrants to the US from Norway, the Volga German Republic in Russia (near Georgia) and Argentina. The Norwegian was a hunter, trapper and homesteader from whom CW probably inherited th strongest DNA.
Coupled with growing up in the same house from birth to 17 it seemed natural he would develop a vagabond mentality.
At age 17 he joined the US Navy to become a chef and see the world. Although he did cook some, he was far more successful in the latter.
During ten years in the Navy, the native of Los Angeles, CA would sail up and down the west coast and sail through the Panama Canal, then up and down the east coast, plus spend nine months in the Caribbean and four months in Hawaii and three in Taiwan, plus a few days in Japan.
His greatest adventures, however, came as a civilian during the last 30 years. Ten years in Egypt, and nearly two years in Botswana and Libya allowed Anderson to gain an entirely new perspective on history and other cultures.
In employment, also, Anderson has been adventure personified.
He has earned a living as a welding inspector for shipbuilding, nuclear construction and steel fabrication, as a quality control manager and as a health and safety manager on international construction projects in Africa and the Middle East, and as a journalist for community newspapers. He also has owned a number of small businesses, including the bait shop and bakery he now runs in North Dakota.
Incidentally, he has scored success in each field he has worked:
- As Quality Director for one Oregon firm he received an award from Kennedy Space Center, presented by a US Senator
- As a journalist and writer a story he wrote regarding Iraq's invasion of Kuwait won him fame and notoriety nationwide; a magazine he started on $20 was named "one of the Best New Magazines for 1986-87" by Library Journal; in 1994 he interviewed Sen. Bob Packwood as a freelance writer; an article he wrote concerning the invasion of Iraq was featured in Finest Hour issue 119 - their trustees then included Jack Kemp, Colin Powell, Margaret Thatcher, and Cap Weinberger.
- As Health & Safety Manager on a Voice of America project in the African bush Anderson was twice featured in a US Army Corps of Engineers periodical
- As creator of a unique savory pie he now calls Golden Pockets, he has been featured in several newspapers and, in 2000, a businessman attempted to found a franchise (Billy Bob's Pot Pies) around the pies Anderson then dubbed as Piety Island Pies in his, Billy Boy's Bakery.
Anderson also has written a radioplay, Travels West With Travis C. Ward and is awaiting news regarding its production.
Thus, it seems only natural that a lover of travel with a wide range of vocations would write for suite101.
